Before the Millenium Puzzle, Yugi was always reclusive and shy, playing with puzzles and games he brought to class than with the other students. After completing the puzzle though, he began to build more confidence in himself and gained a circle of friends. He used to have a crush on his childhood friend Anzu but perhaps has gotten over it, especially since he understands that person(?) she likes is the Pharaoh.

Supposedly the 'dark side' of Yugi that appeared after Yugi put together the Millenium Puzzle, it is later revealed that he is actually a completely different entity who has no memory of who he is or where he's from. It is Yami Bakura who first reveals that the spirit was a Pharaoh, then it was Isis who foretold of the upcoming battle for the Pharaoh's memory. Having won the three God Cards in Battle City and seeing the secret protected by the Ishtar branch of the Tombkeeper Clan, he went to the tablet on display at the Domino City Museum where he was pulled into a sealed memory of the past.

A known delinquent while in junior high school, from where he met Honda, Jounouchi somehow cleaned up his act and got into high school. He was still a bit of a bully though, picking on Yugi, however after Yugi took a beating for him and Honda, Jounouchi turned around and became Yugi's friend. In fact, he's pretty much Yugi's best friend short of the Pharaoh and is very good in a fight. His parents divorced when he was ten, his younger sister Shizuka taken by their mother to the country and Jounouchi remained with his father. A drunkard who apparently can't keep a job, he is apparantly saddled with a heavy debt that Jounouchi works constantly to pay off as well as to pay for daily living expenses and school fees. (Though Domino High School forbids students to work, Jounouchi is an exception and has school permission to do so.)

Anzu is in love with the Pharaoh and has been growing slightly depressed as he is getting closer and closer to regaining his memories. Recently, she bought a blank cartouche pendant on which the Pharaoh can inscribe his name, his real name, once he remembers it. Secretly, she wishes to learn his real name as well...

A high school student, nationally (internationally?) known game master, and president and chairman of Kaiba Corporation, there isn't a person in Domino City who doesn't know who Kaiba Seto is. He is most likely the richest person in the city, which does assist him in getting his way, though simply based only on the spartan regime his foster father Gozaburou put him through, Kaiba is also a master businessman. Seto's mother died giving birth to Mokuba and their father died three years later. Their relatives packed them off to an orphange to take the estate for themselves. It was there at the orphange that Seto promised Mokuba that he would take care of him, become his father. He turned down offers of adoption because he refused to be separated from Mokuba. When Seto was ten, Gozaburou came to their orphanage and Seto tricked Gozaburou into adopting the both of them by defeating him in a rigged game of chess (Seto used Gozaburou's own strategy against him). There are generally only three things dear to him, his younger brother Mokuba, Blue Eyes White Dragon, and Kaiba Corporation. Lay a finger on any of them and you've signed your own death sentence.

Kaiba Seto's younger brother who idolizes his only living relative. He apparently didn't undergo the same rigid regime that his brother went through but for whatever reason, he is instated as Kaiba Corporation's Vice President. Mokuba wants to help his brother in any way possible, feeling that he is the only one who understands his brother and why he behaves the way he does (Mokuba may be right in this) and most likely feels guilty that the cause for all of this is himself. Mokuba is more open-hearted than his brother, hence why he was able to become friends with Yugi and company even if he hated them at first. Very often, Mokuba is the only person who can talk 'sense' to Seto and serve as a breaker to Seto's giant waves. By the way, he is the champion of a game called Monster Capsule Chess.
Ryou Bakura

A transfer student (from another school in Japan!!) who befriends Yugi and company. His favorite game is a Tabletop Role Playing Game called Monster World in which he is the game master. However, it turns out that another personality in the Millenium Ring had been stealing the souls of his other player friends and then tried to do the same with his latest friends. Ryou died to save Yugi and the others but his "player character" in Monster World used a spell to give up his own life for his master's. Bakura is very interested in the occult and of the origin of the Millenium Items. This interest may stem with some fixation he has on his younger Amane to whom he was seen writing a letter once (she's dead). Bakura has only confronted his 'dark side' once, that was when he died, but he is still highly attached to the Ring and wears it always despite everyone else's wariness of it.

An evil sentience within the Millenium Ring who seeks the power sealed behind the sacred door, the same door behind which the memory of the Nameless Pharaoh is. He knows that the seven Items are needed to be placed in the Stone of Memory in an underground temple in Egypt however he only learned recently from Marik that there is an additional key required as well, a key that can only be found in the Pharaoh's memory. So for now, he's cooperating and assisting Yugi in helping the Pharaoh... but he doesn't plan to leave any loose ends behind once he's gotten what he wants.
Sugoroku Motou

Even in his forties he was traveling around the world, challenging and winning in various games. However, in the 1960s, his reputation was made when he survived to make it to the depths of one royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings, a feat that no one in three thousand years had been able to do. It was there that he got the Millenium Puzzle (pieces). Twenty years ago, Otogi Ryuji's father, an apprentice of Sugoroku's, challenged his master for the Puzzle. Sugoroku won the cursed Egyptian game but the senior Otogi swore revenge for the aging curse that fell upon him, the defeated. It is unknown why between then and probably until Yugi was eight (when he was given the Puzzle box) that Sugoroku dropped out from the gaming world and opened up a small shop in Domino City. Perhaps Sugoroku did finally lose to someone and as once jokingly promised, gave up his tuxedo for overalls? The Blue Eyes White Dragon that he had, given to him by an American friend, was torn to pieces by Kaiba Seto after Sugoroku lost to him in a Solid Vision Magic & Wizards duel in the pre-opening ceremony of Kaiba Land. Sugoroku may be connected to the Millennia Story, seeing as how he was saved from death by a phantom of the Pharaoh in the tomb, a phantom that called him Simon.
Pegasus J. Crawford

The son of a Las Vegas tycoon, he fell in love with one of his father's associates' daughter Cyndia. The feeling was mutual. They were planning their future together, as Pegasus apparantly was a popular and talented painter, when Cyndia died of disease at age 17. Afterwards, Pegasus fell into a deep depression, somehow finding himself in Egypt, interested in their mythos regarding death and reincarnation. It was there that he accidentally came across Shadi testing a man for stealing the Millenium Ring. For seeing what should not have been seen, Shadi had him tested to bear the Eye, saying that if he was accepted he would be granted a wish. Pegasus took out his own eye and amidst the pain apparantly saw Cyndia again (whether this was really a granted wish or simply the delusion from pain and mental instability is unknown). With the Eye, Pegasus began the creation of the card game Magic & Wizards. His involvement with Yugi came about because of the clause the Big 5 of Kaiba Corporation (KC) laid before him if he wanted their support in taking over the corporation during Seto's coma. Pegasus wanted KC in order to get their Solid Vision technology to make a life-like hologram of Cyndia. Had he lived, he would probably never have been able to get away from his obsession with his dead lover. As it is, Yami Bakura killed Pegasus and stole the Eye.
Interesting Fact: Pegasus is a tragic character, both with his inability to accept death and because he was being used as a puppet by the Eye. Pegasus was never supposed to permanently have the Eye in his possession, only for as long as he worked toward the purpose of bring out the Magic & Wizards game, a key to setting the stage for the Pharaoh's recognition. This fact comes out of the interview with Takahashi-sensei at the end of the Yugioh character book.

Claiming to be an apostle of Anubis, this Egyptian man bearing not one but two Millenium Items first appeared before Yugi in the Domino City Museum where the findings of a new tomb excavation were on display. He is the winged death, the curse that is said to kill those who defile the royal tombs. Using the Millenium Ankh (Key), he put the Pharaoh through a series of deadly "games" in order to test to see if this spirit of the Puzzle was truly who he thought it was. Shadi has been working to protect the Millennium Items and to prepare for the Pharaoh's return. Seven years ago in Egypt when Pegasus met him, there were four items in the Stone of Memory (Scale, Ankh, Eye, and Ring). Five years ago, he appeared before young Isis and Marik in a crowded marketplace proclaiming the Pharaoh was soon to awaken and then again (halfway out of a wall this time!) after Marik found his murdered father. Yami Bakura seems to recognize or know Shadi from somewhere as well though that has yet to be explained. It was Shadi who sent Bobasa to meet the Pharaoh in Domino City after Battle City though he was nowhere to be seen, his items were already in the guardianship of Bobasa.
Comments: Shadi as a ghost? That thing about only half appearing out of a wall is a good indicator. However there is also a bit of inconsistency in the manga with his art. He is much older when Yugi met him than he was in the flashbacks with Pegasus and Marik. A theory is that Shadi himself is only a spirit that manifests through the power of the Ankh. As such, the person Yugi met in the museum was a Tombkeeper clan member who willingly allowed Shadi to possess his body in order to carry out his duties. In addition, though Bobasa said it was by Shadi's orders that he came, he also said "by the will of the Ankh/Key". And since Bobasa was able to use the Ankh to allow the group to enter into the Pharaoh's Soul Room within the Millenium Puzzle, Shadi might in fact be 'residing' within Bobasa even now. How long Shadi has been in this condition is unknown but he seems to not know enough to have been as old of a spirit as either the Pharaoh or Yami Bakura.
Isis Ishtar

The elder daughter of the Ishtar branch of the Tombkeeper Clan and probably regent as well since Marik abandoned his duties to create the Ghouls and destroy the Pharaoh. She is a resigned to a dark fate, perhaps a result of the atmosphere of despair and darkness that she was raised in underground. She is as much sister as mother to her brother since their mother died giving birth to a heir to the family. She came to Japan as a member of the Egyptian government, the division that deals with the care of Egyptian historical artifacts though the majority of the display items were in fact the ones from the private care of the Ishtar clan. Both Kaiba and the Pharaoh have given her hope, the former the hope that the future is not set and the latter in restoring her brother.

Possibly spoiled by Rishid and Isis because of being the youngest, Marik only wanted to live above ground under the sun without the burden of his family's duty. The appearance of Shadi when his father died caused Marik to think that the Pharaoh was responsible for his father's death and set Marik on the path to sabotaging the Pharaoh's return and taking his place. He founded the Ghouls to search for the God Cards which were needed to unlock the Pharaoh's memories and used the Rod to keep control over his "people". After his possession by Yami Marik, Marik is resolved to live with his guilt and has fulfilled his clan's duty to Pharaoh.

Born out of the despair, pain, and anger that filled Marik after his father forced him to undergo the family's ritual "carving" (which took place on his birthday, thus getting Yami Marik's DOB), he was always "sealed" by the presence of Rishid who could calm Marik's emotions. Once Rishid fell to Ra's divine anger, Yami Marik was able to force Marik aside and come out. All he desires is destruction, of everyone, everything, and the world in general. Fully thriving on the power of Darkness, believing himself "chosen" by the Rod, he offers sacrifices (Mai, Bakura) to the Darkness in exchange for more power. However, in the end, he was defeated by Marik who succeeded in pushing back his dark side and banishing it to Yami.

Left by the well on the surface above the Ishtar's underground home, Rishid was adopted by the late Mrs. Ishtar. The late Mr. Ishtar, Marik's and Isis's father, only saw Rishid as a servant though Rishid desparately wanted to be recognized by the man. He is very devoted to Marik, willingly to share the pain of the the Ishtar family's traditional scarring as well as accompanying Marik when he broke the clan rules and left to form the Ghouls. Like Isis, he knows about Marik's dark personality and he knows that his presence can keep that darker side from coming out.
